Michelle Martinko, an 18-year-old Cedar Rapids Iowa high school student, was found stabbed to death in her family’s car less than a week before Christmas on December 19th, 1979. She had gone to buy a new coat at the mall that evening, but never made it out of the parking lot. The murder was closely followed within her community, and the police received thousands of tips after her killing. However, the case gradually grew cold as the investigation stretched on, remaining unsolved for 39 years. But, thanks to the new science of familial DNA, a distant family member’s Ancestry DNA kit led police to the killer – Jerry Burns, who was later convicted and is serving a life sentence in prison for Michelle’s death.
